Healthy Eating, Active Living
Our “Healthy Eating, Active Living” (HEAL) program promotes physical activity and healthy eating at home, school, and within the community. Students receive high-quality physical education in school, and parents and teachers gain access to fitness classes, healthy living resources, and nutrition support.
Through the HEAL program, our students built a garden where we grow herbs, vegetables, and fruit. These are being cultivated by the students, who use their harvest in weekly cooking classes. We also established a strong School Health Committee to continue to identify and address health needs within the community.

Student Spotlight: Meet William
Three weeks after William arrived from Cuba, his parents reached out to us, expressing their hope that he would make friends and learn English quickly.
At ASAS, William receives academic assistance, as well as extra opportunities to socialize and practice his English. He brings a wealth of knowledge to our garden project, introducing peers to produce common in Cuba, as well as family recipes that include home-grown spices and exotic fruit like mame. Through our garden, William has found a sense of community and an outlet to express himself!

We’re thrilled to feature an outstanding All-Star who has discovered her passion through community service and advocacy. Meet Aurie-Anne, a ninth-grade student whose achievements at ASAS South Florida have earned her a prestigious role as one of only ten Youth Ambassadors for the Afterschool Alliance!
The statistics on youth mental health can be daunting: across the U.S., 11.5% of youth (2.7 million young people) are experiencing severe major depression. Our free, year-round programs strive to provide positive mentorship and foster healthy habits in safe environments where students feel heard, valued, and supported.
Thanks to a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, our Rising Stars program is connecting hundreds of students across the country with year-round mentors. Rising Stars has been introduced to 28 metropolitan communities across ten ASAS chapters where at-risk youth are struggling with multiple risk factors that contribute to juvenile crime and truancy.
